Counselling for Individuals and for Couples

Our counsellors offer a range of discrete counselling services to individual clients and couples with issues such as Anger Management, Depression, Anxiety and Couple Counselling. We will work with a client to identify the most effective combination of counselling approaches to meet each client's unique circumstances and work with a client to provide an integrated programme of counselling to support them and provide a path to change.

Anger Management

Anger is something that serves a purpose in our lives, sometimes it is justified and healthy to be angry, however, it often gets out of control and wrecks relationships and lives it becomes out of control and a major problem. Anger cannot be completely removed. However, it is possible to bring it under control, to learn to manage it. Just like any other skill it requires training and effort from the individual but there is a path out of destructive anger. We have experience to working with such individuals to bring their anger under control to give them the knowledge of why they become angry so they are prepared, the skills to diffuse their anger, and teach the skills to find more effective responses and effective ways of managing anger.

Depression

The good news is that depression is the 'Curse of the Strong' but it often is associated in the suffers mind with failure, guilt and shame. Another surprising finding is that over 80% of suffers will, given time get well even if they have no treatment. However, it can take time to heal naturally and dealing and living with the circumstances that initiated and sustain depression can make life feel overwhelming. This is where we can offer help. We provide an initial assessment to help clarify the causes of depression and what is maintaining it in a client's life. Following this we work to progressively build the client's ability to deal with their depression through identifying the patterns of their negative thoughts and how to deal with these.

Couple and Relationship Counselling

We use only counsellors trained, qualified in couple and relationship counselling and with at least five years relevant experience. We maintain a non judgemental approach to working with a couple to identify the underlying causes of the problems in a relationship.

We are unable to deal with relationships where there is ongoing domestic violence. In such cases we refer clients to where they are able to get more effective and appropriate support at RESPECT.

Anxiety

Anxiety causes deep distress to those who have experienced it. While everyone experiences anxiety, it can develop and become a real impediment, restricting the ability to lead their lives eating away at self confidence. Our programme of Anxiety Counselling begins by exploring its underlying causes. We use a dual approach of teaching techniques tailored to recognising the causes of the anxiety and progressively and at the client's own pace reducing the level of anxiety. In addition, we adopt the dual approach of helping the client build their self esteem and work to reduce the likelihood relapse by through the client gaining practical skills to reduce anxiety to manageable and appropriate levels.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition which originates with obsessive thoughts that are both repetitive and compelling and result in behaviour which becomes obsessive to the point where it can disrupt the suffers life and come to dominate it e.g. a gardener who becomes obsessed with the idea of needing to wash his/her hands to the point where their existence becomes focussed on this task, eventually resulting in their not being able to perform their work, washing occupies his/her life and damages their hands. The most effective form of therapy in dealing with OCD is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy where both the client’s obsessive thoughts and their compulsive behaviour are addressed. For those completing a course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy 7 out of 10 suffers will report that they have benefited from CBT, the benefit ranges with individuals but is typically reduced by 60-80% after a course of sessions.
